Fatty Liver Pain In Right Side

Hepatic Steatosis Treatment

Fatty liver is nothing but build up of fat in the liver cells and this occurs through a process of steatosis.( i.e. abnormal retention of lipids within a cell). When accumulation of fat is accompanied by progressive inflammation of the liver( hepatitis), it is called steahepatitis.

Don't Worry : You can Get Rid of Hepatic Steatosis Naturally at Home.

Dull abdominal pain, fatigue, weight gain, blood sugar imbalance, flatulence, cramping, bloating, general feeling of ill-health, loss of appetite, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, constipation, jaundice, nausea, fever and vomiting are the symptoms of fatty liver disease.

These symptoms arise from causes like starvation, alcohol, diabetes mellitus, obesity, corticosteroids, poisons, hyperlipidemia and Cushing's syndrome. Microversicular fatty liver is caused by Valporic acid toxicity and high dose of tetracycline during pregnancy.

Liver biopsy and blood tests are the diagnostic techniques used in confirming the attack of this disease. Natural treatment with foods, nutrients and herbal medicines obtained from nature can cure fatty liver filtration.

Changing over to healthy way of life and taking balanced diet will be of immense help in curing hepatic steatosis. Do exercises regularly and avoid tobacco, alcohol and oily, spicy and fatty foods. Salads, meat, boiled or baked vegetables, foods high in fiber and low in calories and saturated fats can strengthen the liver. Grapefruit is rich in vitamin-C and burns fats and restricts development of fatty liver .Drink plenty of water and fresh fruit juices.

Allow Nature to Cure You

Milk thistle, licorice, artichoke and dandelion can cleanse, heal and rebuild the liver. Rosemary and phyllanthus are effective in restoring the normal functioning of the liver.

Fatty liver does not cause pain. The liver has no nerve endings to cause pain. I had liver failure and a transplant and my liver never caused me pain from the liver disease. You should see your doctor so you can get a correct diagnosis and treatment for whatever is causing your problem.

    • ANSWER:
You should be with either a gastroenterologist
      or hepatologist now.
There are different causes of a fatty liver:
      alcohol consumption, certain medications like
      steriods, diabetes, weight gain, insulin
      resistance, hereditary conditions and others.

You could have simple fatty liver...but because
your Bilirubin level and Liver Enzymes are
      higher...you could have inflammation inside
the liver. This is not good. It is no longer
just simple fatty liver....when this takes place.

If it is not related to alcohol consumption..
then it is known as NASH or
      Non Alcoholic Steatohepatitis
Steato means fat, hepat means liver,
      and itis means inflammation.

When inflammation develops in the liver,
if it continues on, it can lead to the cells
of the liver starting to die off and form
scar tissue in the liver that blocks the
      flow of blood.

I would follow, exactly, any treatment the
doctor tell you, so the disease doesn't
advance. If you cannot eat, ask the doctor
for supplements you can drink. He can
tell you what is appropriate according to
your blood testing. If you have been told
to lose weight...You should have been
referred to a dietician to give you guidelines
on the type of food you can eat and how much.

When inflammation develops in the liver,
it causes the liver to enlarge in size...this can
cause discomfort and, at times, pain.

  3. QUESTION:
Does fatty liver cause any pain?
i had an ultra sound.,,, and it shown that i have fatty liver, i have a pain like burning in right side of my stomach in one sopt . is that for fatty liver? or maybe something els hmmm

    • ANSWER:

I am not sure about the burning, but fatty liver can cause discomfort of some sort on your upper-right side. Here is a reliable source from the University of Maryland medical center:

      http://www.umm.edu/liver/alcohol.htm

"Fatty liver is excessive accumulation of fat inside the liver cells. Fatty liver is the most common alcohol-induced liver disorder. The liver is enlarged, causing upper abdominal discomfort on the right side."

  4. QUESTION:
why do i get a pain in my right side when i stop drinking?
I have minor live damage and a fatty liver when i drink i feel fine but when i stop i get a really bad pain in my right side. As soon as i drink it goes away what might be causing this and how long will it last.

    • ANSWER:
I used to have exactly the same problem on my left side lower abdomen area. I think the alcohol numbs the pain. If you quit drinking for an extended period of time the pain will go away.

  5. QUESTION:
Fatty liver and in pain how can i relieve it?
I know some1 that recently found out he had a fatty liver with a shadow on it, the doc said that there's no lasting damage but that it was caused by drinking to much, and that he has to stop. Which he has done but he's in a lot of pain on his right side and has been feeling dizzy, is there anything he can buy over the counter to relieve this pain. He also has a bit of a phobia about taking pills in the first place so anything natural or anything that dosen't involve a prescription would be really helpful.......

    • ANSWER:
      are you george best?

  6. QUESTION:
Heartburn, Stomache pain on Right side, Prior ultrasound? Any answers?
Hello. I am a 35 yr old female, have had 2 children (c-section) and a hysterectomy. I am a bit overweight, approx. 40 pounds. I have been diagnosed in the past with stomach ulcers. Most recently (January) I had severe right side (2-3" below the ribs), I went to the Dr. assuming I had an appendicitis, well it seems I didn't. He ran tests and did an ultra sound, my stomach, pancreas, gallbladder, kidney and appendix were all fine, however he did say that I showed signs of moderate fatty liver disease. Recently, (last week) I started having the same pain in my side, it was severe last weekend and hurt worse with movement. I took it easy, what what I ate (when I did) and it has gradually gotton better, (is still a dull, constant, aching pain), however in addition to it now I have SEVERE heartburn after I eat/drink anything. I have a horrible taste in my mouth, my stomache, chest and throat burns, I still have the pain in my side as well. Antacids don't help, bland diet didn't help, water didn't, Aciflex meds didn't help. I am in pain and am not sure what else this could be. I know I should see a gastroenterologist, but I am not eligible for insurance for another month. I know there are such things as gall stones, acid reflux, GERD, ulcers, etc. But does anyone have any educated idea as to what this is and should I be extremely concerned or should I hold out a few more weeks until the insurance kicks in and I can see a professional. My quack of a Dr. doesn't seem to help me much, anyone out there with the same symptoms and a diagnosis, and Dr's out there with suggestions. Thanks for any help!!!

    • ANSWER:
This is reason for concern and could be an indication of something like a problem with the heart (when a woman has a problem with her heart such as if there's an impending heart attack-just using this as an example only-the symptoms that can occur can be in the stomach area and also cause heartburn) but I would recommend checking with the city health department to see if they offer a free health clinic that can evaluate the situation.

If not, I would recommend going to the ER for further evaluation of the situation to see what they say.

  8. QUESTION:
Liver pain? or what is it?
HELLO. I HAVE BEEN FEELING THIS SHARP PAIN ON MY UPPER RIGHT SIDE. USUALLY GOES TO MY RIGHT BACK SIDE. IT FEELS WEIRD LIKE IF I HAD GALLBLADDER STONES. I DON'T HAVE A GALLBLADDER ANYMORE. IDK WHAT THIS PAIN COULD BE. LAST YEAR IN OCT, MY DOC SAID I HAD A FATTY LIVER. I WONDER IF I HAVE SOME TYPE OF LIVER DISEASE BECAUSE I WENT BACK TO MY DOCS AND I HAD BLOOD TEST. MY TEST CAME OUT LIVER FUNCTION ABNORMAL. IM SO SCARED!!! WHAT CAN IT BE?
BY THE WAY...I DONT DRINK OR TAKE TYLENOL.

    • ANSWER:
A fatty liver can be causes by a number of different things: alcohol consumption,
certain medications...like steriods, diabetes, insulin resistance, pregnancy, weight gain, high cholesterol/triglyceride levels, hereditary conditions, mal nourishment, and others.

If the fat is inside the liver, it causes pressure inside...since the liver is surrounded by a membrane capsule. The fat can build up that it pushes the nucleus of the liver cells out of place. If a person stops the alcohol, or loses weight, or controls their diabetes, or stops medication that causes it...then the liver cells may heal and the fat disappear.

However, if this doesn't take place...the liver cells can start to be very damaged. When the cells of the liver become damaged, the immune system of the body responds to this and causes inflammation to develop inside the liver, also. This can cause the liver to enlarge in size. It can be seen on either an ultrasound or Ct scan.
This is then not to be just Simple Fatty liver disease...it has progressed to steatohepatitis. Steato means fat, hepat means liver, and itis means inflammation. It is then more serious.

Inflammation, if it isn't treated and the cause stopped...can lead to death of the liver cells and scar tissue forming inside the liver that blocks the flow of blood through the liver, on its way back to the heart, and also blocks the flow of blood to the other liver cells and they will die also.
It is very important that this patient be with either a gastroenterologist or hepatologist now. That he follows any instructions the doctor may give them about how to reverse it before the cells die off.Once the cells die and scar tissue form...it is a progressive disease, known as Cirrhosis of the liver.

There are different blood tests that the doctor does:
      1) the liver enzymes show if there may be damage to the liver cells.
      2) the liver functions tests show if the cells are able to perform the 500 plus functions the liver does to keep the body well
      3) the liver viral testing show if a virus has entered the body and is using the liver cells to replicate itself
      4) the auto immune tests to see if the patients immune system are destroying its own bodies cells
      5) cancer testings like alpha fetoprotein tests.

I would get in touch with your doctor and be sure he knows all the symptoms you are having. I would tell him every drug you have taken...this includes over the counter meds, vitamins, minerals, herbs, herbal teas, supplements, and prescriptions prescribed by other doctors. The medications goes through the liver first, to be broken down, before going to the rest of the body. Medications has to be adjusted accordingly, if the liver function is slowing down.

It is wonderful that you don't drink and take tylenol. These are the two main things that worry doctors who have a liver problem...cause they can cause even more damage if they are not stopped.

I hope you have simple fatty liver and that it can be reversed. Best of wishes to you. It is very hard to wait for testing to be done and to hear the results...

  12. QUESTION:
    liver your something else?
can the liver hurt the middle of your back?i have alot of symptoms of Pancreatitis but they did a ct scan of the stomach and they say all my organs looks good. i have the upper right side pain goes to the back can the upper right side have burning feeling? only thing they told me is i have a high hertia and acid relux and fatty liver. the pain goes away but when it comes back it will for about 2 weeks. i tested for hepatitis and came back negative.my liver function test was normal. the alt went to 56 but they said that was in the normal range. could this be ibs or what

    • ANSWER:
I first tried to email you, but you have it set to no email. What makes you believe that your liver is your problem? Has a physician indicated this too you?
You need to be seen by a gastroenterologist, this is a physician that specializes in the gastrointestinal tract. You may have to travel to do this. Just because one Dr. tells you your ct scan looks ok does not mean there is not a problem. You said ct of the stomach, do you mean abdomen? If you had a ct of the stomach then that was the only organ that was seen, some how that doesn't seem appropriate.. The hiatial hernia you mention would cause gastric reflux, but not the type of pain you speak of.
It is very hard to find a physician who can care for and diagnosis a patient with pancreatitis. If is very well possible for a person to have a stone blocking the common bile duct which would cause pain and increase liver enzymes. Your family physician would be the Dr. to direct your care. You should ask for a referral to the type of physician I mentioned. Either way, if it is pancreatitis or your liver this is the Dr. who would care for either organ. It is very well possible that you need further testing both blood and procedural if so, you may have to travel to one of the more advanced hospitals for diagnostic testing. You are your own advocate. There are many yahoo groups for people with chronic pain, there are other out here who understand how you feel, look and join ones that appeal to you.

  13. QUESTION:
What is the pain around my liver area after binge drinking?
I've been to many doctors, none can figure it out. I'm 20 years old, I've been a bit of a heavy drinker over the past 3 years (weekends & some weekdays).. Just socially with friends, but usually a fair bit of alcohol is consumed. For about the past 6 months i've been feeling increasing pain in the right side of my body (like a dull ache) around the liver area. Scared myself with researching fatty liver & cirrohsis etc yet i have had all the tests completed and come back normal. I've had liver function blood tests, hepatitis tests, ultrasound and also an endoscopy. Everything back normal. I've also been given some sort of anti-gas tablets and they didn't work. I still get this pain when drinking and it's only getting worse. I have stopped drinking for the past 2 weeks purely cause of this pain yet i can still feel it once every now and then, the main time i can notice it is when i lay down to sleep and when i wake up.

Any ideas? because it seems the 3 doctors i've been to can't figure it out.

    Pain in my right side.....?
35 year old male. I weight train heavy. Weightbelt always used in the gym.
I have noticed in the last 3 weeks a subtle pain in my side. Let me describe where it is as I am sure there are a multitude of common things it could be.
The pain is aligned with my belly button. Follow your belly button to the right side horizontally for about 8 inches. (on me anyway). This should put you just about above your right pocket.
I am getting a subtle, dull pain, and I can almost feel some small lumps under the surface. Granted I have lost bodyfat and almost wondered if at times the little bumps I was feeling was fatty tissue. However....when I press in a little, I can provoke the pain.(only slightly though). Ive had thoughts of my appendics, but the location is wrong.....liver....I don't quite thinks so, but I could be wrong. I believe my liver is located further up under my ribcage.....
SO, anyone? A strain....?Some weird spot for a hernia? Even thought maybe my weight belt pinched me....LOL
No, I have not worked abs.

  17. QUESTION:
My mother in law has really bad pains on her right side belly and doctors don't know why?
My mother in law whom is 60 years old called me to tell me she was sent home from the hospital after complaining of really bad pains on her right side belly. Her pain radiates to her back and it's a constant pain. I recommended she gets a second opinion and that I would go with her to the emergency because she speaks no English. My mother in law tells me not to tell the doctors that she was sent home from first hospital she went to. I was told by the doctors that they will perform a CT scan and again results come back negative. Right away they start an IV and giver her morphine to help the pain. I see my mother in law acting funny so the doctor explains that the medication is really strong and that it will give her a little rush. She then relaxes and falls asleep, a little while later she is sent to get a sonogram of her right side belly and results come back normal. I was told that she will be admitted for further testing. Today I go back and they had sent her for a third examination and the doctor said if it comes back normal she is going to be sent home. I see my mother in law being wheeled from down the hall crying in pain and again they are giving her more morphine. I am puzzled as to why the doctor can't find what is going on with her. She drinks alcohol and smokes heavily so the doctors said she had a fatty liver and that if she drinks alcohol she needs to stop. My mother in law tells me to tell the doctors she doesn't drink or smoke and I feel like I am not helping her if I am going to stand there and lie to the doctors. I would like to know has anyone experienced bad right side belly pains and were the doctors able to find the cause of the pain. Tomorrow I will speak to the doctors and tell them that she does smoke and drink and that she was already at another hospital got a ct scan and given morphine and sent home. I know the doctors aren't geniuses but what is my mother in law to do continue taking pain meds and she hasn't been able to eat for 3 days already. Help any advice is appreciated.
My mother in law had a hysterectomy many years ago, so I don't think it has anything to do with menopause. I did ask the doctor if he thought it might be an intestinal problem but he just nodded no and said they are not geniuses and are going by the results they get back from her testings.

    • ANSWER:
You have to be straight up with the docs. Also most smokers think they can fool the docs but they can't. The pain on her right side might be coming from her reproductive system. Even though she is probably in menopause there are still pains that can happen because of things shutting down. Also the bowel and intestines are affected by the alcohol and smoking and might be one of the reasons for the pain and without the docs knowing they might not know what to test for properly. Good Luck and I hope she gets well soon

  18. QUESTION:
    Steatohepatitis and Fatty Liver Question?
I have been feeling pain in my right side, and it feels like there's a rock, so to speak, where my liver is. I read about NASH and am afraid that my liver could die out. If it does, can I get a transplant from like a family member with the same blood type? And would the NASH show back up if I changed my diet after the transplant? I am freaking beyond all belief that I won't see 2012.

    • ANSWER:
First you need to find out if there is even a liver problem going on with you before you decide your liver is probably dying. Go to your doctor and let him/her examine you and give you some blood work before you start worrying about transplants and dying. Even if you would have NASH, it doesn't mean you will definitely need a transplant. Change in diet will help when having a fatty liver is the problem. I would like to mention that the liver itself has no nerve endings, so it really doesn't cause pain. There is a sac around it that can cause some pain, but that is rather rare. I had liver failure and a transplant. My liver never hurt me the entire time. It takes many, many years for NASH to ever progress to needing a new organ.

    Digging Pain by right rib?

The pain is aggervating/uncomfortable during the day but is worse at night. It keeps me awake. Pain relievers do not help nor does a heating pad. There are times my rib gets tender and feels like it is bruised. I have had no injury in the area.

I do have Acid reflux. I did have an abdominal Ultrasound a couple of months ago of my liver, gallbladder and pancreas, didn't show up anything apart from a fatty liver. I do take 30mg of lansoprozole a day.

This pain that you are noticing could be related to a condition called costochondritis (an inflammation of the cartilage around the ribcage), but this is an example only.

I would recommend getting back in touch with your doctor to see what they think could be going on.

Have you seen your doctor yet, Sue?

See, it does sound to me as though you have maybe 'popped' the rib joint or even cracked the rib. I know you've said you don't have an injury but these things are surprisingly easy to do.

Even if you have, your doctor probably won't do anything much except give you pain relief tablets.

Why don't you see a chiropractor or an osteopath? They might hurt - but they're more likely to help than anyone else.

Best I can do I'm afraid.

  23. QUESTION:
Will an educated doctor tell anyone that alcohol is not a cause of Fatty Liver?
My sister just recently visited the local medical clinic due to severe pain and bloating on her right side.

She has consumed a good amount of alcohol daily for last 7 or 8 years. When she slows down she still binge drinks, which can be worse than drinking daily. I think she even hides how much she actually drinks, so she has always been scared that her alcohol consumption has affected her health.

Well, the doctor examined her and told her that she could feel that her liver is enlarged (which to my understanding must be fatty liver, correct?)

Anyway, my sister got her lab results back today and they came back negative, which means that her liver is functioning...so...what? Her liver is enlarged, and her lab results are negative... should she not go in for a biopsy? The doctor did not even recommend that. Let's remember this is a medical clinic doctor, so hopefully they graduated from med school...another thing which alarms me is that the doctor even told her that fatty liver is caused only from obesity, and that she has no need to worry because she is not overweight... this is rediculous! How could a doctor tell someone who is potentially a heavy drinker that fatty liver is not caused from alcohol!

Does anyone have any experiences they can share to help me understand how doctors can be so stupid? Now my sister thinks she is in the clear, and that all she needs to do is cut down her drinking... great!

I am so upset, because now my sister thinks that she has no need for a second opinion. BTW, she does not have medical insurance, so she does not have a regular doctor.

    • ANSWER:
First, there are two types of fatty liver disease...
one is the non alcoholic kind and the other is
caused by alcohol. The non alcoholic kind
is caused by weight gain or hereditary reasons.
However, all liver patients are told not to drink
alcohol. Alcohol is the number one reason for
      a problem with the liver.

If her liver is enlarged, she has inflammation
inside the liver cells. This is not good. If
the inflammation is treated and the cause is
eliminated..she has a good chance of
recovery. If this is not treated and the cause
cannot be eliminated, then it may advance to
death of the liver cells and this is then a
progressive disease that only the doctors can
      try to slow down.
Lab work is not 100% accurate. Some people
don't show a problem when there is one.
It usually takes a series of blood tests to be
sure of the results. There are different tests
that the doctors do: the liver enzymes, the
liver function tests and the viral tests to see
if the problem is caused by a virus.

Your sister should be seeing either a
      gastroenterologist or a hepatologist.
This inflammation can lead to death of the
liver cells that form scar tissue inside the
liver that will block the flow of blood through
the liver...this is known as cirrhosis.
A liver transplant costs in the range of
0,000 and up and the drugs to take
      afterwards are quite costly also.
Cirrhosis of the liver is a horrible disease and
many who have it because of alcoholic problems, wish they would of known way back
so they could do something about it before
they ended up on the transplant list hoping to
      receive a donor liver.

The best thing for a patient to do now, since
she has inflammation of the liver, which causes
an enlargement of the liver...is to only take
drugs prescribed by her doctor and to tell
the doctor all drugs she is taking whether it
be over the counter, cough/cold medications,
herbs, herbal teas, vitamins, minerals and
those prescriptions prescribed by other doctors.
She should not take any medication with alcohol.
If she has trouble stopping the alcohol, the
hospital usually has a detox program where
they give the patient medication to help control
the symptoms she may have coming off the
alcohol. If your sister is addicted, she has
now two hurdles to take care of. Hoping she
doesn't get cirrhosis and also overcoming
this addition. She will need support and
      not criticism to do this.

There are many causes of cirrhosis of the liver
      some being: alcohol consumption, medication
      toxification, mushroom poisoning, chemical
exposure, biliary obstruction or mal formation,
fatty liver, viral (virus) like Hep A,B,C,
      and there are others.

I hope this is of some help to you.
The doctor usually starts out with a series
of blood tests and an exam to feel the liver
by hand...than an ultrasound is usually done
to confirm the enlargement and check for
growths, blood flow through the liver, and
      any abnormalities. They usually don't
do a liver biopsy unless they suspect it
is cirrhosis of the liver. Cirrhosis of the
liver is the death of the liver cells that form
scar tissue inside the liver and blocks the
flow of blood through the liver. As the cells
die off, the liver will start to shrink in size and
      become harder in texture.

  24. QUESTION:
please help urinary tract infection vs. fatty liver?
Please help I went to the doctor I m having pains on my right side of my belly right under the rib cage… the doctor took blood tests and sent me to go get a sonogram…when I was at the sonogram I ask the lady that was doing the sonogram if everything was ok she said very look ok but that it look like I had fat in my liver two days later the doctors nurse called me and told that all the blood work came back fine she said liver is working fine kidney are working fine but you do have a urinary tract infection and she gave me some meds. My problem is that the pain is still there I just started the meds this Tuesday and I m real worry has any one else had the same pain the pian has been there for like three months my weghit was 275 and I have lost 23 pounds in last three months what do ya think? Am just bit freaked out or should I go get a second opion
I started a real simple diet eating oatmeal in the mornings and grilled chicken for lunch and I skip dinner sometimes I would eat dinner

And I work out six days a week for one to two hours

    • ANSWER:
No you are not freaked out. first the weight loss is important and I would have tolook at your diet to know full facts so please email me. i had this 30 years ago and still on a very low fat diet and take enzymes with all my food else it would not get digested.

Go on to a low fat diet now, it cannot hurt you, all you miss out is chocolate, biscuits, fried foods, junk food etc and substitute god food, fish boiked and so on. Do this for three weeks and see if you feel better.

based on your findings I would then go back to the GP and tell him what you were told at the clinic.

Ask for an ultrasound of the liver. It is non invasive and will tell the truth of if you have it or not.

      Best wishes G

  25. QUESTION:
Hepatitis C-weak positive and fatty liver - kindly nswer only doctors?
    Doctors Please answer

My mother is suffering From Abdominal pain below the right side ribs. Many doctors diagnosed in many ways and they have given the treatment in various methods but the problem increased.

I would like to request you for FOUR answers
    A. What could be the problem as the following are the details of recent tests?

    1. My mother age – 61 years
    2. Diabetic since 15 yrs
    3. Uncontrolled diabetes
    4. Recent Scanning reports shows
On 22nd Oct – 15.9 cm size of liver
On 01st Nov – 17.0 cm size of liver
    5. The liver function test shows the SGPT - 69 and SOPT - 42 levels elevated.
    6. HEPETITIS A – ANTIBODIES - 0.26 – (LESS THAN THE NORMAL OF 1.001)
    7. HEPATITIS C – ANTIBODIES - WEAK POSITIVE
    8. All other are normal

    B. What could be the cause of pain as now she is not even in a position to sit for more than 10 minutes

    C. What could be the diet for my mother

    D. could any one suggest me a doctor in and around Chennai, Bangalore

    • ANSWER:
I had that problem before my Hep C treatment - it's an intestinal spasm. It felt like someone was twisting my intestinal tract with a wrench. It will stop you in your tracks.

I was able to control the spasms by going on a strict vegetarian diet. I also did a liver cleanse twice.

Not sure what you mean by WEAK POSITIVE - you either have it or you don't and if you have the antibodies chances are she may have it. Her next step will be to get a viral count from a doctor because her liver enzymes are slightly elevated above normal.

Normal range for ALT (SGPT) enzymes is 7 to 56 units per liter.
Normal range for AST (SOPT) enzymes is 5 to 40 units per liter.

  28. QUESTION:
What illnesses would cause right rib pain and urinary tract infections?
I started having a mild dull pain under my right rib a month ago. It would happen for a few seconds and stop for a long time. As time progressed I started having flank pain, dark/frequent urine, chills, weakness, fever, mental fogginess, painful constipation, low blood sugar, lower back pain, nausea, vomiting and bladder pain. I went to a doctor and was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection. My symptoms worsened as I started Bactrum for my uti. I started being unable to walk more than a few feet, my back would start hurting and my muscles would give out on me. I felt as if walking was injuring my kidneys. The flank pain was so bad when I laid on my sides. I went back to the doctor two days later and was put on Cipro. My symptoms started improving, and I was able to stand and walk comfortably. However, my symptoms came back, but slightly different. I went back to the doctor again and they found no remaining infection, but I was diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis. I asked the doctor what he thought about the pain I was having and thought it might be stones in my kidney or gallbladder.

Since then I've been vomiting and dry heaving when I wake up in the morning, my groin area hurts when I have a bowel movement and sometimes when I pee, the pain in my rib has gotten worse, it occasionally radiates to my sternum area and to my back under my shoulder blade, I get chills every once in a while, I have brief but sharp moderate pain in isolated areas of my urinary tract and I have trouble concentrating and going to the bathroom. I have a family history of gallbladder disease/stones, kidney stones, fatty liver and diabetes. I had a bout of gastritis exactly a year ago and had an ultra sound of my gallbladder to rule out gallstones and was normal. I woke up last night with pain under my sternum and felt dizzy. I can't see my family doctor for a week and am afraid that I will have to go to the emergency room before it happens. What does this sound like?

BTW, I haven't had any signs of jaundice or pale stools.

    • ANSWER:
A friend of mine just found out she has a kidney stone after having alot of UTI's. I'm not sure what all her symptoms were, and I don't think they were as severe as yours but she would have never thought in a million years she had a kidney stone. She is a healthy 22 year old going to nursing school so she thought she would have known but she didn't.

Ask your doctor to check for a stone. Either kidney or gall bladder. Good luck!

    • ANSWER:
I don't mean to scare you, but you need to get this checked out right away. I would suggest maybe seeing another doctor just to see if he comes to the same conclusion. I'm not sure what this could be though...let me suggest you to start researching if you have an hernia but I honestly can't think of much. Good luck.

  30. QUESTION:
'Fatty change in liver' what is the cause and what is the remedy?
I had mild pain around upper right side of stomach, had a sonography done, was told there is 'fatty change in liver'. What does this mean? I used to smoke and drink (though have quit that 2 weeks back) and am a bit overweight. My general physician said no medicine required, only diet control. Could someone help me here. Also, can I start doing basic cardio exercise like walks and jogging? Request someone to assist me with getting this liver problem under control.

    • ANSWER:
My husband just had an ultrasound and then a liver biopsy, and it showed he had a non-alcoholic fatty liver. His doctor recommended, for now, to use fish oil (a vitamin= easy to find at a store), to lose about 20#, watch what he eats (not much red meat, very little junk food, very little salt, no pop, etc.) and to exercise. If unattended, this can become very serious. DO NOT drink anymore. Maybe a beer/mixed drink here and there, but no more than that. Cardio/walking/jogging are all good! :)

  31. QUESTION:
Help me with finding out why I have so much pain?
I am a nurse of 15 years. I have chronic back pain. Pain for 5 years. Mostly the pain is under my scapula. I thought it was just muscle spasms. But, I just got lab report back from routine check-up. My SGPT is 76 and SGOT is 46. Two years ago I was having some pain in my abomen and went to the ER. They did a scan and said I had fatty liver. Well, got busy with kids and family and never really worried about it again. Until now. I am trying to see if the upper back pain could come from the liver. Recently, I was also having some right side pain for about two days but it went away. I have been to massage therapist and chriopractors. They all said that my upper muscles are very tight. One of the worse one they have seen. I am overweight. 5'5'' 200pounds. I am just trying to narrow down something before I go out and spend a lot of money on doctors and test. Help Please.

    • ANSWER:
This does not sound like diabetes. Sounds more like a possible kidney infection. Kidney pain is in the lower back on one side or the other. However, kidney stones can cause pain in the lower abdomen and pelvic regions, and lower as they move. You need to get a complete workup done at your doctors. It could be anything. Make sure you tell your doctor everything, and tell him all of your symptoms.

    • ANSWER:
First you have a second opinion. There is test for diabetes called ALC, ask your doctor, this tell you how much sugar is in your blood going back prior three months. The normal average should be 5 or 6. The blood sugar goes up and down. I have diabetes type 2 and sometimes when I checked I have 95, and sometimes it goes to over 200. The fact that your thirsty could sign of diabetes, I hope not. But you take 8 glasses of water no more than that. I think you are drinking too much water. The kidney's pain is not in the front, it's usually in the upper back. Did you tell your doctor when you take a big breath you got pain in the bottom of your lungs. You should see another doctor, but don't be to worry, maybe the worry is causing all those problems plus taking so much water. Nobody die the day before you are supposed to. I fee like that sometimes and most of the time is stress.

    • ANSWER:
Fat infiltation inside the liver is known as Fatty Liver
      Disease.
There are different things that can cause this problem:
      alcohol consumption, medications like steriods,
weight gain, can occur in pregnancy, mal nourishment,
losing weight fast, metabolic disorders, hereditary
      conditions, high cholesterol/triglyceride levels, and
      others.

Fat inside the liver puts pressure inside the liver.
The liver is surrounded by a membrane capsule.

Fatty liver disease, usually progresses as follows:
It can be simple fatty liver which doesn't cause much
problem and can easily be reversed.

However, if the cells of the liver become damaged,
the immune system of the body will respond to this
damage and cause inflammation to develop in the liver...
this is then known as Steatohepatitis.
Steato stands for fat, hepati stands for liver, and itis
stands for inflammation. The inflammation adds to
the pressure inside the liver and will cause the liver
to enlarge in size. (can be seen on an ultrasound or
      Ct scan)

If the cause can be found and stopped and the
inflammation treated, they liver cells may heal.

If this cannot be done, it can progress to where the
liver cells die off and form scar tissue inside the liver
which blocks the flow of blood. This can turn into
an irreversible disease known as Cirrhosis of the liver.

It is best to follow any doctor instructions you may be
given. The best doctor to be referred to now is
      a gastroenterologist.

  36. QUESTION:
I have had a pain from dull to major in my lower right backside what could it be?
Yeah i know go to the dr. but i have been. its a constant pain sometimes dull annoying sometimes down right painful. its about halfway down the ribcage on the right side to a little past your waist line. i cant sleep on my right side too long or it hurts when i turn i wince. I avoid wearing tight or normal fitting pants cause it hurts. dr said it may be urinary tract because after a pee test he saw traces of blood. well got my period the next day may be the reason. I know its not a syatic nerve because its not in the spot where i get them. he gave me muscle relaxers but pain still there. I dont really care for my dr he is new i just moved in the area. will take a while for another dr to be available. I did have a ultrasound on my liver and it said ihave a fatty infiltrate whatever that means. they didnt follow up with another appointment so i thought nothing of it. is this having to do with my liver? sh
gallbadder is gone forgot to mention

    • ANSWER:
It could be an infiltrate, but I would assume that the doctor would have done something about it, if the liver was the issue. However, if you're new to your area, go the ER and have them check you out....they will find out what the problem is and recommend a doctor who better suits your needs. Good luck and feel better.

  39. QUESTION:
What is wrong with my husband's liver? Please help.?
My husband was diagnosed with a bit of a fatty liver over a month ago. He's had blood tests, but it showed nothing else. He's had stomach problems since he was a mid-teen (he's now 27). These have gotten worse in the past 9 mo. (severe cramping & diarrhea 3-5/day). He had a liver biopsy done over a wk. ago; he had severe right shoulder pain after, then w/pain meds. he was fine. 3 days later, he had severe side/stomach pain- a CAT scan and X-rays found nothing. His dr. now says he wants to see him to discuss the biopsy. My experience is that dr.'s will usu'lly tell you over the phone if nothing is wrong. But since he wants to see him, I'm worried to death. What kinds of things could be wrong? (He's also been having pain again today). He doesn't drink or smoke.

    • ANSWER:
The biopsy should just confirm that he has Fatty Liver Disease. While there are no cures for this, and no surgeries to fix this, the only oprion prescribed by doctors is a healthy lifestyle change: diet and exercise. Not treating Fatty Liver Disease can result in cirrhosis, liver failure, and death.
From what I have seen, the best option is diet and exercise. Check it out here:

  40. QUESTION:
    Back pain and Bloated feeling?
My husband has had this pain in his back for about a week now and each day it gets worse. He first thought a kidney stone, because he gets them frequently but he said this time is different. It's not excruciating pain. It is sharp and stabbing, but not like a kidney stone. And usually he has blood in his urine by now and he doesn't have that and the pain hasn't really moved.

He doesn't have a fever. The pain is right below his rib cage on the right side of his back. It's not tender to the touch, but it does hurt to lay on it in certain positions. Basically if his body isn't all contorted, he's in pain. The pain does not come and go, it is constant. Aleve has not helped (which I hate giving him NSAIDS because he has a genetic fatty liver, but it helped his pain in the beginning).

He also feels bloated all along his right side (it's not a visible swelling to me) and he said all he wants to do is sleep.

He's been drinking tons of water and no change in symptoms. Any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
      get him to the ER.

  42. QUESTION:
ok here goes. I want to ask this serious question again. I was diagnosed with liver desease, ?
and my liver function tests are high. I have pain on the right hand side of my abdomen in the upper abdomen, and when I get the pain it gets bad. I have what you call a non alcoholic ( as I do not drink, nor am I obese) fatty liver disease. I found out that if left untreated this can lead to liver cancer or failure, and I am very worried. I am due to get another liver blood test early January next year and I was told that if my levels are higher I will be referred to a specialist at a hospital who deals in this kind of thing. so what I want to know is is this true if left untreated can this lead to liver failure? as if it does that means death as I will refuse to get a liver transplant. YUCK. so please help me here. I am 39 and female, and need to know if my levels are higher in Jan could this mean I have the beginning of liver failure?
    PLEEEEEEZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ help
thanks Jandy. If I am going to die it will be of this. and hey I know where I am going so really I am not affraid of death. God bless you.

    • ANSWER:
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease in the United States. It consists of two stages – a fatty liver and NASH (nonalcoholic steatohepatitis). The only way to distinguish between these two stages is by looking at a sample of liver tissue under a microscope after a liver biopsy has been performed. The medical term for a fatty liver is hepatic (liver) steatosis (fat). A fatty liver is considered a benign (harmless) condition characterized by fat deposits in liver cells (hepatocytes). This is a reversible condition, and does not have the potential to lead to cirrhosis, liver failure or liver cancer. NASH is when a fatty liver has progressed to something worse ---namely inflammation (steatohepatitis) and scarring (steatonecrosis) of the liver. Unlike a fatty liver, NASH is not considered a harmless condition, but rather a liver disease with the potential to cause cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer.

The reason that NAFLD is prefaced by the word “nonalcoholic” is because the results of liver biopsies from people with NAFLD are frequently identical to those from people with alcoholic liver disease

So, what causes NAFLD? Well, medical authorities currently believe that most cases of NAFLD are caused by a condition known as insulin resistance. But, more about this later in the chapter. What types of people are most at risk for getting NAFLD? People with type 2 diabetes (adult onset diabetes), obese people and people with hypertriglyceridemia (high level of fats {triglycerides}) in the blood) are at risk for getting NAFLD. What role do weight and diet play in NAFLD? Weight and diet play an important role in NAFLD. Excessive weight greatly increases the likelihood of someone getting NAFLD. Ditto for an unhealthy diet, especially one which is high in fats and sugars. Does lifestyle also play a role? Yes, a sedentary lifestyle will probably increase one’s chance of getting NAFLD. Contrarily, regular exercise may reduce ones chances of getting NAFLD.

People who are overweight are more likely show signs of insulin resistance than people who are of normal weight. But keep in mind that a sedentary lifestyle and a diet rich in sugars and fat may promote insulin resistance --even among people who are not overweight. Thus, NAFLD can occur even in people of normal body weight. In fact, it is thought that most people with NAFLD have insulin resistance independent of weight

  43. QUESTION:
I have a question about liver?
I just had a full blood panel done and then some. I had my entire overall health evaluated. My only problem is, is that I have "Slightly" elevated liver enzymes. I had an ultra sound, and was told that I have mild fatty liver. I do not drink alcohol, and my doctor said it is nothing to worry about, just lose some weight, eat right, and work out. Well I have had a dull achy pain on my right side. I dont know if thats the cause or not. It only happens when I sit down. The only way for me to describe the pain is you know when you drink too much water before u run, or workout, and then you get the dull achy cramp in your side. Thats what it feels like. I know there is nothing else wrong from my blood work, and I just had my entire torso looked at in the ultra sound. What do you think? Its really annyoing.

    • ANSWER:
Just do as the doc suggests and the liver will lose it's fat.
Being a bit overweight is a major cause of fatty liver.
Your pain may be something as simple as a pulled muscle. If it persists take yourself back to the doc.

  44. QUESTION:
What can cause high liver ensymes?
Hi I have been a nervous wreck for the past week I had my doctor check my Thyroid levels because of recent weight gain turns out when the test came back that my thyroid was ok but my liver enzymes were at 173 (that test was done 2 weeks prior) I just recently went to the ER because of a pain in the right side of my abdomen and extreme nausea all day. I had an ultrasound and a CT scan done ultrasound revealed nothing but the CT scan showed a lesion of 1.9 cm the ER doctor told me to follow up with my doctor I have been crying non-stop very scared. When I saw my Doctor 2 days later he called the radiologist to ask his opinion what he thought it was doctor says he didn't seem concerned it appeared to be a hemangioma he also told me me enzymes levels were at 80 at this point still high but they had come down some. My doctor went ahead and referred me to a gastroenterologist he said he knew the ER doctor had scared me enough and understands my doubts? My question was if a hemangioma is not suppose to be a bad thing why are my enzymes high? Does anyone have any insight on what it could be based on results they have not told me fatty liver.

  45. QUESTION:
Pain after drinking alcohol - Male 33 years?
Pain after drinking alcohol - male 33 yrs?
For the last few months I have been getting pain in my upper right quadrant after drinking alcohol. I have been a heavy drinker since my university days, I'm now 33, and at one point would probably have been consuming up to 100 units per week.

In January of this year I decided that my drinking had to stop as I realised that I was abusing drink and using it as a tool to mask depression, anxiety and general unhappiness. Around the same time as I decided to tackle my mental issues I started getting these pains on the right hand side of my abdomen (coincidence?) around the bottom of the ribs.

I visited my doctor and explained the situation and he referred me for some liver function tests (2 months ago) and subsequently an abdominal ultrasound (3 weeks ago). Both the liver function tests and the abdominal ultrasound appear to indicate that there is absolutely nothing physically wrong with my liver, gallbladder or kidneys. No inflammation, signs of fatty liver, signs of it not processing toxins properly etc...I have seen three different doctors at my local surgery regarding this and all say that there is nothing physically wrong with me. I have also been physically examined and again nothing would indicate any liver problems.

I have naturally cut drinking down to an absolute minimum and didn't drink at all for around 2 months whilst I was undergoing tests etc. I feel so much better mentally and physically since changing my habits and have also been taking up a lot more regular exercise: running, swimming, pilates and squash which are naturally helping to increase my sense of well-being.

However on the rare occasions that I have had an alcoholic drink, since being told that I'm fine, I get the pain back. All it takes is one glass of wine or pint of beer/cider and the following day I will have this inner pinching type of pain under towards the bottom of my rib cage, right hand side that heads up towards the navel area.

Can anyone share any similar stories, diagnosis or suggest a line of enquiry I should take with my doctor? Things I am thinking about include:

    • allergy to alcohol or yeast/hops/grapes(?!?)
    • irritable bowel syndrome (I think the pain would be lower down however)
    • gout/high levels of uric acid - can you test for this?
    • psychological - am I creating the pain through worry?

I just want to get on with the rest of my life. I feel I have taken some huge steps and have a much more positive outlook but all the time things hangs around it keeps niggling at my brain and my worry is that my symptoms all seem to indicate liver problems but tests prove otherwise.

Thanks for taking the time to read - any advice warmly received!

  46. QUESTION:
    Unexplained pain? Help please!?
I'm 16 and i've been experiencing pain around my body that wasn't even there before. First of all, this pain started yesterday around after school like 3 and the pain is about a 2.5/10. The first pain was around my left shoulder, like right on top. It felt like a burning pain like a sunburn inside my skin. Throughout the day, I felt right abdominal pain again since I was diagnosed with mesenteric adenitis for about a month now. When I push on my right side, it still isn't my appendix since it doesn't hurt at all. Weird thing though, because it feels like the pain radiates to my left side too and it down move more to the right side of my body and really below the appendix almost near my waist. Will mesenteric adenitis do this as well? I also feel on and off back pain sometimes in the top middle, top right/left/ or lower right/left side. I'm also 230 pounds, idk if this will be the cause. I'm also eating healthy and exercising, although im afraid that the pain will worsen. can anyone help me please? Even if you don't answer all of it, can anyone at least explain one thing from any of these pains? The abdominal pain still continues, but isn't severe. It does go away and comes back. The shoulder pain stopped.

And also...I really don' t think it's diabetes because I went for a blood test requested from my primary doctor since we followed up after the diagnosed mesenteric adenitis. Also, we found out that I had a fatty liver. And after the blood test reading, I didn't have any diabetes and my sugar was normal.

I really need answers for this if anyone knows or had an experience as well. Thanks for your time and God Bless.

    • ANSWER:
Another case that leaves the doctors scratching their heads? I suspect you have a weird case of gout where the tiny urate crystals exist in your upper abdomen. To confirm this, go for a blood test for and see if your blood uric acid level is above the range. And then run your own urine test for uric acid, here is how...

      1. Get a transparent plastic cup or mineral water bottle
      2. As soon as you wake up in the moring, collect the first round of urine into the bottle.
      3. Cover the bottle and keep it in cold dry place far away from the reach kids
      4. After a few hours, observe (pay close attention) if there is any crystal like substances deposits at the bottom of the bottle.
      5. If you see some small white particles in the fluid, then it means you are having hyperuricemia.
      6. If no sediments observed, then leave it there for another 1 or 2 days and check it again.

      Good luck!

  48. QUESTION:
    Nerve pain in the temple?
    Hi

Recently I had certain episodes of nerve pain in my head and I had consulted a neurologist , who got an MRI and MRA of my brain done. The report came normal and then he suggested a medicine named methico plus. which i continued for 20 days, the day I stopped the medication I had a severe headache lasting for the whole day, and after that I am noticing that left side of my head near the temple there is a vague pain not sharp, and i can sense the pain traveling up-to the jaws, It seems like someone has put a finger on the nerve , sometimes the pain happens in the right side of the head. During the day I am also experiencing that the back side of the head, near the neck region is heating up or at times sweating, I am feeling nausea all the time.
(here I would like to mention that I have fatty liver, which maybe the cause of feeling nausea, I also have sinus, and since childhood I have a history of severe headaches).

I will be consulting a neurologist, but I am amazed that I recently had an MRI done which came clean, so I am a bit shocked. Also I am worried, am I being vulnerable to a brain stroke?

Thanking you in advance for your response

    Regards
    Addi

  49. QUESTION:
Can Endometriosis be found in the kidney or liver?
I have endo. I found out on 7/05, after many doctor visits and going into debt. Anyways, again I am having issues. I have always had this growing pain in my upper Right side. It has been there for about 8 years now. But now the pain has taken over my whole right side(upper and lower). I have had every test, gallbladder, stones, ultrasounds, CT scans, you name it I have had it. I have been to so many doctors, and they just don't know what could be causing the pain. I just get sent to the next doctor(while getting the look of this is all in your head), wait a long time for the appointent, only to be told they can't find anything. Please help, I am in pain, and it is driving me crazy. In 11/05 they did say my liver had two fatty spots on it, but I did not need to worry about this. Help!!

    • ANSWER:
Absolutely. It has been documented on virtually every organ, up to and including the brain and the lungs. Surgical intervention is needed to diagnose and locate the implants (and more importantly, remove them), as CT scans/MRIs/U/S can rarely see them. Insist on getting the help you need and consider seeing a specialist if you run into a dead end with your current medical team. Such places are located throughout the country, including the following Endo treatment centers:

      http://www.endometriosissurgeon.com
      http://www.drcook.com
      http://www.endoexcision.com
      http://www.reproductivecenter.com
      http://www.centerforendo.com

Also check out this referral board for someone who might be good at treating Endo in your local area:

      http://groups.yahoo.com/group/EndoDocs

Good luck to you; you're not alone.
